Storytime....

We just love a story, an explanation, a narrative that explains things away for us.

Right from toddler age, we start to ask "why?". We crave a better understanding, to make sense of the people and the world around us. This interest isn't limited to the external world and population; we're also intent on understanding ourselves too. We tell ourselves the most powerful stories of all, and they're not always helpful!

Considering our primitive desire to protect and survive, it's no wonder we are so keen for understanding. Knowledge is power.

But it's more than that. We have an absolute need to explain away our own beliefs and behaviours. How often do you use the words

"I've always been...." shy, the joker, overwieght, loud, anxious...

"I've never been...." sporty, pretty, confident, healthy, technical...

Whilst we're all born with certain personality traits and pre-disposition to certain skills or qualities, our evolution into adulthood is greatly determined by everything we see, feel, hear, experience every single day. With each experience we start to create and build our belief system, forming our values, creating the basis for our reactions, our fears, our responses.

In simple terms, if you're terrified of spiders, you weren't born that way, you LEARNT to be scared of them. But it may FEEL as though you've ALWAYS felt that way.

So, what other stories have you been telling yourself that aren't helping you to get where you want to be?

Feeling unworthy, comparing yourself unfavourably to others, assuming you may not succeed, fearing what others are thinking about you? All of these and many more onbstructive thoughts are simply based on stories that can be rewritten to help you feel better about yourself and your place in the world.
